CKCU is Ottawa’s original independent community broadcaster. Founded 50 years ago, its rich history is one of showcasing the arts and culture of under-represented communities, of building up local musicians and creators, and of connecting diverse listeners to their city and their neighbours. It’s run entirely by volunteers who keep the lights on as radio show hosts, support staff, producers and fundraisers. CKCU is both a portal for discovery—where radio lovers go for music journalism, great sounds and new connections—and a grassroots community hub.

In fall 2022, Spruce was approached to help develop a creative concept for the station’s annual fundraising campaign. It hinged on the idea of CKCU hosts and DJs being the catalysts and connectors in every community. We helped create and execute a social media campaign and a broadcast campaign with the tagline “Found CKCU? Fund CKCU!” to solicit donations. Centered around an assortment of jolly mascots representing everything CKCU brings to the community, this toolbox became the launchpad on which station volunteers could make their request for community support.

Several colorful stickers, including BIG BEATS, CKCU repeated three times, a musical note, LISTEN LOCAL, a purple radio tower, and a hand sign, are arranged on a laptop near the keyboard.
A yellow poster on a brick wall reads Bringing Communities to Life. It advertises a fundraising campaign with a QR code, dates, and cartoon characters with musical instruments. A blurred person walks by.
