The Health Arts Research Centre (HARC) at the University of Northern British Columbia aims to address health inequities through arts and humanities rooted in anticolonial methodologies. HARC conducts research that contributes to the renewal of health and well-being in northern and Indigenous communities of British Columbia and beyond. HARC developed the H.E.A.L. Healthcare project to help doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals and practitioners take better care of their patients and themselves.

HARC hired Spruce to design, animate and produce a whiteboard-style video. Using a single line of white chalk on a black background, figures, icons and doodles depict collaborative efforts, introspection, and the power of treating the person instead of the illness. By highlighting how healthcare can be difficult and even harmful to patients who don’t fit a colonial mould, the video illustrates how art and compassion can change the world—one heart at a time.
