Canadian citizenship ceremonies are run by the department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). They play an important cultural and social role in introducing New Canadians to the responsibilities and promises of citizenship. The Oath of Citizenship outlines many of these commitments, but it does not cover all the complexities of Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples nor Canada’s complex colonial history.
In partnership with First People’s Group, Spruce was hired by IRCC to script, produce and edit a five-minute welcome video that included perspectives from First Nations, Inuit and Métis community members. Combining visual storytelling with scripted and unscripted messages from women, men and children from across the land, the video provides a brief overview of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and outlines opportunities for New Canadians to participate in Truth and Reconciliation. Produced in English and French, it also features multiple Indigenous language speakers offering words of welcome.
The videos are now screened as part of the opening of every Citizenship ceremonies across the country.
