Indigenous music: Enhancing client stories with authentic sounds

At Spruce, our work revolves around storytelling. The stories that we craft to connect audiences with our clients and their goals include language, graphic elements, video  and often, sound.

Whenever a story needs music to elevate a video or animation, we look for musical work that connects to the project in the most meaningful way. This means having the right sound, tempo and overall feeling for a project. As well as knowing where that music came from. Who wrote it?

Increasingly, we have been finding those sounds at Nagamo Music. Our videos for Ādisōke,  Ottawa Tourism and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada were elevated by the music of Indigenous artists and composers in Nagamo’s extensive catalogue.

We asked Nagamo to tell us about this unique service of connecting creators with Indigenous musicians.

Here’s how co-author, Ange Brascoupé of Nagamo Music, describes their work:

Nagamo is more than just music, it is a living connection that continues to carry the wisdom, stories and traditional sounds passed down through generations. It echoes the deep-rooted histories of our ancestors and the resilience of our cultures.

Our focus extends beyond media representation, Nagamo collaborates with artists and composers from diverse communities across Turtle Island, each bringing their own unique sound.

For too long, “native sounding” production music wasn’t Indigenous made. Nagamo Music changes that. We connect a community that’s driven to offer traditional, contemporary and intertribal remixes featuring First Nations, Métis and Inuit composers.

Since launching in early 2019, Nagamo has served as a vital access point to talented Indigenous musicians. We’re proud to be a groundbreaking force, reshaping the industry and redefining how Indigenous sound is represented in media.

So far, Nagamo has had the pleasure of working on the following projects:

Nagamo continues to open doors and illuminate paths, creating space for truth, talent and transformation in an industry long overdue for change.

While rooted in Indigenous perspectives, our production music is not limited to Indigenous productions, it’s also welcomed in non-Indigenous works that aim to share our stories with respect and integrity.
